For over six decades, the Franco-German Youth Office (FGYO) has fostered dialogue between young people on both sides of the Rhine. To date, over 10 million youths have taken part in its programmes, reflecting its constant ambition: to support a European youth in motion, in tune with their practices, expectations, and challenges.
This dynamic manifests in formats closely aligned with contemporary cultural practices. Among them, the film criticism workshop organised in partnership with La Semaine de la Critique stands out as a unique space for experimentation and reflection. From 17 to 22 May, twenty young people from various French regions – Bourgogne-Franche-Comté and Normandy – and German states – Rheinland-Palatinate and Saxony – will come together to share their perspectives on this year’s selection.
Beyond artistic discovery, the aim is clear: to learn how to analyse, argue, and debate, while discovering oneself through engaging with others. Guided by professionals, the participants will develop their critical thinking skills, sharpen their gaze, and try their hand at contemporary forms of film criticism. An immersive experience that extends well beyond the festival.
In a saturated media landscape, where streams of images and information constantly overlap, the ability to decipher them has become essential. Film literacy is a greater driver of intellectual empowerment than ever before. From our recently renewed collaboration with the Berlinale to our partnerships with La Semaine de la Critique and Série Mania, these programmes help craft an informed perspective, able to grasp the complexity of today’s world.
This approach forms part of a broader ecosystem of initiatives carried out with numerous film festivals and events, including the Tübingen-Stuttgart International French-speaking Film Festival, Franco-German film events such as the Augenblick German Film Festival in Alsace, and the French Film Week in Berlin. All are spaces for experimentation where creation, education, and engagement intersect.
This framework is designed not only to train discerning audiences, but also to equip a generation with the tools to make sense of the world they inhabit – and will soon shape. In an international context marked by profound transformations, spaces to share and confront perspectives are more vital than ever.
