Right under the dictators’ noses

How are young directors faring? How do they find the strength to film the wounds of our world – the endless wars, the terrified populations, and pervasive predation? These days, I often find myself thinking about Charlie Chaplin – his moustache, and that stroke of genius when he donned the dictator’s garbs and danced with the globe. And I think about Guillermo Galeo, filming these two children as they play among the trash in Sleepless City – who continue to live and dream even though there’s no place for them anywhere. Now more than ever, cinema must make us play and dance right under the dictators’ noses. I would like to express our friendship with the wonderful team at La Semaine de la Critique, who strive, every year, to renew our faith in the power of cinema. To tell them that we, the SACD writers, shall continue to stand and fight by their side.
