La Semaine de la Critique's channel on KINOSCOPE

La Semaine de la Critique Cannes and KINOSCOPE  are thrilled to announce the launch of a streaming channel  dedicated to the short films that have been selected at La Semaine de la Critique. It starts with the presentation of shorts from last 2019 edition with special online appearance of film “Junior” by Julia Ducournau (RAW, 2016). Films from past editions will be added regularly, on month to month basis.

PARTY DAY (2019) 

17 min, Portugal  Sofia Bost 

Mena lives alone with her daughter Clara. Today is Clara’s seventh birthday. Despite her limited financial resources, Mena still manages to organise a birthday party. But after a phone call from her mother, she becomes distraught and anxious.

ABOUT SOFIA 

Sofia Bost was born in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1986. She studied Communication in Lisbon and earned a Filmmaking master’s degree from The London Film School. Sofia currently lives and works in Lisbon. Party Day (Dia de festa), her first film, is selected at the 58th Semaine de la Critique. 

 

THE LAST TRIP TO THE SEASIDE (2019) 

12 min, Romania  Adi Voicu 

Six passengers are traveling to the seaside in a train compartment. After a while, a suspicion makes some of them lose their composure and the remainder of the trip goes terribly wrong. 

ABOUT ADI 

Adi Voicu is graduated in Visual Arts and Film from the Film University Bucharest, in 2005. He directed the documentaries: Faces (2006), Metrobranding (2010) and Victoria (2011) which were selected in festivals like Nyon, Jihlava, Leipzig, CPH:DOX. His short film Fog (2017), his debut in fiction as a director won the Grand Jury Prize in Premiers Plans Anger 2018 and Centaur for the Best Debut in St. Petersburg Message to Man 2017. Capturing Sami, Adi’s first feature won CNC Romania production support. 

TUESDAY FROM 8 TO 6 (2019) 

26 min, France  Cecilia de Arce 

Névine, a secondary school monitor, is fully committed to her somewhat thankless day job, dealing with teachers, administration and students. Logan, a pupil she is fond of, insists on getting a cap back from lost and found. She has no idea of the consequences of her gesture. 

ABOUT CECILIA 

Cecilia de Arce is a director and screenwriter who graduated from 3iS in 2015. Her graduation film,  Une sur Trois, was selected at the Clermont-Ferrand Festival the same year and wins the Award for Best Actress.  Mardi de 8 à 18 (Tuesday From 8 to 6), her first produced short film, is selected at the 58thSemaine de la Critique.

 

NAPTHA (2019) 

18 min, United Kingdom  Moin Hussain 

Faraz’s quiet life working at an isolated petrol station is turned upside down when his ageing father Malik begins to speak in a long-forgotten language and insists on returning back home. 

ABOUT MOIN 

Moin Hussain’s first short Holy Thursday was funded by Creative England and screened internationally. His second short Real Gods Require Blood premiered at Semaine de la Critique 2017, was nominated for Best Short Film at the BFI London Film Festival 2017 and screened at Sitges, Frightfest, and Edinburgh. His third short, Naptha, is funded by Film4 and Film London and premiered at the 2018 BFI London Film Festival. He is currently in developing his debut feature with Escape Films and Film 4. 

 

 

JUNIOR (2011)

Justine, a.k.a. Junior, is a 13-year-old tomboy with pimples and her own brand of humor. She's just a tad misogynous. Afterbeing diagnosed with stomach flu, Junior's body undergoes a bizarre metamorphosis 

ABOUT JULIA 

Julia Ducournau is a French film director and screenwriter. She attended La Fémis and studied screenwriting. In 2011, her short film  Junior  was selected at la Semaine de la Critique and won the Petit Rail d'Or. Her first feature film  Raw  was acclaimed internationally after its world premiere at la Semaine de la Critique. 


La Semaine de la Critiqu that focuses on discovering new talents (revealing first and second feature films. Such directors as  Chris Marker, Denys Arcand, Bernardo Bertolucci, Jean Eustache, Philippe Garel, Barbet Schroeder, Ken Loach, Merzak Allouache, Romain Goupil, Leos Carax, Amos Gitai, Wong Kar-wai, Arnaud Desplechin, Benoît Poelvoorde, Guillermo del Toro, Jacques Audiard, Kevin Smith, François Ozon, Andrea Arnold or Gaspar Noé).

Kinoscope is an online platform dedicated to presenting films by established and emerging filmmakers. It praises a broad variety of cinematic works through curated streaming/VOD exhibition, live screenings, and publications. Kinoscope aims to enhance the appreciation and understanding of film as an art form globally among diverse audiences.
