About Les enfants partent à l'aube (Children Leave at Dawn)

By Léo Soesanto

How can one bid farewell to her son over the gap that has long been deepening between them? This thought plagues Macha during the final jaunt with her son, enlisted by the mountain Infantrymen. In Manon Coubia's documentary-like approach, what's left unsaid equals the weight of tears, but most of all it becomes apparent in the overall light design: " we wanted to explore the shifting point between daylight and night, the faces, with the film grain tackling the endless possibilities from white to black". In the dark or on snowy backdrops, feelings stick out as complex as they are ruthless.
