Born in Marseille, Jean-Bernard Marlin graduated from the ENS Louis Lumière and the Scriptwriting Workshop of La Fémis. In 2007, he got attention thanks to his film La Peau dure; he then directs La Fugue in 2013 (Golden Bear at the 2013 Berlin IFF and selected at the 2014 César Awards). His first feature, Shéhérazade, filmed with non-professional actors, is selected for the 57th edition of La Semaine de la Critique.
