THE SUBMISSIONS TO THE 57th EDITION OF LA SEMAINE DE LA CRITIQUE ARE NOT YET OPEN.
Article 1 - The 57th edition of La Semaine de la Critique, organised by the French Union of Film Critics, will be held in Cannes, from May 10th to 18th, 2018 during the Cannes Film Festival.
Article 2 - To be admissible at La Semaine de la Critique, the film must comply with the following requirements:
For feature films only:
- Must be the director’s first or second full-length feature or documentary film (only films theatrically released and/or selected in festivals are counted).
For all films, short and feature films:
- Must have been completed within the 12 months prior to the date of the Festival (between Cannes 2016 and Cannes 2017).
- For foreign short and feature films: mustn’t have participated in any festival except in its country of origin (whether it is in competition or out of competition).
- Mustn’t have been shown on the Internet or broadcasted on TV, or commercially released outside its country of origin.
Article 3 - Films will be chosen by two selection committees: a Short Film Committee supervised by a short film Coordinator, and a committee for Feature Films. Both committees are under the responsibility of the Artistic Director. The Artistic Director and the committees’ members are all journalists and film critics from the French Union of Film Critics, which has appointed them.
Article 4 - An entry fee applies for Short Films and Feature Films submissions. The films won’t be screened until the entry fee has been paid. Entry fees are not refundable.
The amount of a short film entry (duration equal or less than 59’) is 25 euros (without taxes). The amount of a feature film entry (duration more than 59’) is 120 euros (without taxes). VAT applies or not according to the category your company belongs to.
VAT doesn’t apply for the following categories:
- Company based inside the European Union with an Intra-community VAT identification n°.
- Company based outside the European Union.
VAT (20%) does apply for the following categories:
- Company based inside the European Union WITHOUT an Intra-community VAT identification number
- Company based in France
- Private individual
The payment has to be proceeded by credit card during the registration process.
Article 5 - Film registrations will be considered as confirmed when the online submission is done on our website (www.semainedelacritique.com) and the entry fee is paid. La Semaine de la Critique reserves the right to refuse any registration that hasn’t followed all the submission steps. Films sent without any registration will be refused.
Article 6 - Subtitles: short and feature films can be considered for preselections without subtitles if the original language of the film is French or English, and with English or French subtitles for any other original language.
Article 7 - The deadline for the submissions:
Short Films submissions:
➢ The deadline for the submission and uploading of short films is March 17th, 2017. Please note that the uploading will have to be proceeded during the submission process
Feature Films submissions:
➢ The deadline for the submission of feature films is March 17th, 2017.
➢ The deadline for the reception of feature films is March 17th, 2017.
Article 8 Screening formats for previews
Short films are uploaded on the Semaine de la Critique website once the online film entry process is done. Any short film sent in an other format will not be considered by the selection committee. More information about short films submissions and upload here.
All films should be made available to the selection committee before the deadline in one of the following formats: DIGIBETA, HD CAM (NO-SR), DVD, BLU-RAY, DCP, 35mm.
DVD & BLU RAY:
DVD & Blu ray must be sent directly to La Semaine de la Critiques’s office:

To be seen by the selection committee, films have to be specifically sent to La Semaine, independently from the other Cannes sections. Each Cannes sections has to receive its own format of the film. Any DVD or BLU-RAY sent to the Official Selection or to the Directors’ Fortnight to the Semaine de la Critique’s attention won’t be considered by La Semaine.
DVDs and BLU-RAYs sent to the Semaine de la Critique’s Film Department have to mention clearly the followings:
- Film’s title
- Director’s name
- Registration file number
- Country of production
If videos are sent through an express mail service, the costs of custom duties and taxes must be paid by the sender.
DCP, HD CAM (NO-SR), DIGI BETA & 35MM:
For those materials, please contact Hélène Auclaire (tel. +33 1 45 08 81 56) at the Film Department before the registration. DCP previews can require an additional entry fee corresponding to the cost of that specific kind of screening. Please note that the DCP screening slots are very limited.
If you decide to present this type of material to all Cannes sections, please get in touch with our Film Department to warn us a print will be sent to Paris and set a screening date.
Article 9 - The results of the pre-selection will be communicated by email and email only in the second half of April. No results will be given over the phone.
Article 10 - Shipping and insurance costs as well as customs taxes and customs broker’s fees (to and from Paris and/or Cannes) including "temporary admission" rights are at the expense of the producers. The Semaine de la Critique won’t cover any transportation costs. The responsibility of La Semaine covers the cost of storage and insurance in our screening rooms. The right-holders must make sure they’ll be able to cover every shipping expense that a selection in Cannes implies.
Article 11 - Films selected at La Semaine de la Critique can be screened in Cannes in 35 mm (2 copies) or on Digital DCP (3 copies). Foreign films are to be screened in their original version with French subtitles and English electronic subtitles (under the image). Subtitling is at the producer's expense.
Article 12 - Selected films cannot be screened anywhere in Cannes before La Semaine’s official presentation.
Article 13 – La Semaine de la Critique’s Jury will award the best feature and the best short films in competition. First feature films are also competing for the Caméra d’Or prize.
Article 14 - The 10 Short Film Directors selected in competition at la Semaine de la Critique can participate to the Next Step programme. Organised in December, in collaboration with the TorinoFilmLab, Next Step is a week-long training workshop that gives the filmakers the opportunity to benefit from the advice of international consultants on their feature film project.
Article 15 - After the Cannes Film Festival, the selected films will be screened in France (Corsica, Paris), Beirut-Lebanon, Lima Film Festival (Peru), Morelia Film Festival (Mexico). For short films only, Prague (Czech Film Center) – The list of reruns can be modified. Right-holders of the film must put copies at disposal for each rerun, until the end of all the reruns. The producer must inform his sales agent, his French distributor and the distributor of the rerun country of these obligatory reruns.
Article 16 - Material received in pre-selection will be returned only upon written request, at the expense of the producer. DVDs and BLU-RAYs will be kept by La Semaine de la Critique until September 30th, 2016, after which, they will be destroyed.
Article 17 - La Semaine de la Critique reserves the right to make unilateral decisions about situations not mentioned herein and/or make exceptions to the rules.
Article 18 - Selected films must use La Semaine de la Critique’s logotype on all their promotional material (posters, press kits, teasers, film prints).
Article 19 - Participation in La Semaine de la Critique implies acceptance of the foregoing rules and regulations.
